With the approval of the National Irrigation Administration for the installation of a solar floating project at the Magat Dam Reservoir, SN Aboitiz Power (SNAP) mounted its 732 solar panels in a 52 meter floating ring. This floating solar project has the capacity to generate 200-kw of electricity for SNAP-Magat facilities.
After almost 3-months of activities, the floating solar with an investment cost of Php 24 Million Pesos, was duly completed. As this is the first non-hydro power project of SN Aboitiz Power and also the first floating solar project for NIA, the switch-on activity held on June 27, 2019 was attended by dignitaries. Among those who attended were the Ambassador of Norway to the Philippines His Excellency Bjorn Jahnsen, Department of Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi, the top management of Aboitiz Power Group headed by Erramon Isidro M. Aboitiz, SNAP President and Chief Executive Officer Joseph S. Yu, the National Irrigation Administration Administrator Ricardo R. Visaya and the Cabinet Secretary Karlo Alexai B. Nograles.
It was stated by SNAP President and CEO Joseph S. Yu that this pilot floating solar project holds the potential for significantly greater things in the future. They had chosen the wet season for its switch-on as the season will test how the floating solar will withstand the rain and wind, typhoons and strong inflows. The 10-month stress test on the facility will determine the viability of the project. In an interview, Mr. Yu mentioned that they feel that floating solar has a place in their portfolio as they want to provide energy security without giving up agricultural land, for as mentioned by NIA Administrator Ricardo R. Visaya that a hectare of solar field can generate one megawatt of power.
